“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 NIV
His name is Jesus- this heartbreak Hero. He stands above the rest, swoops in when everyone else backs off and He saves us from our distress.
Many people don’t know how to handle a heart broken person. Whether their heart break came from external circumstances or internal consequences of bad decisions, on-lookers often feel lost for words. Maybe they even feel like they don’t have the capacity to deal with the heart break so they withdraw- leaving the heart broken person feeling even more isolated and alone. I think we’ve all been there. On either side.
But God knows our heartbreak and He sees us in our despair. He hears our cry and He comes to our rescue.
He comes close.
He’s not afraid of your ugly cry. He’s not aloof to your confusion. He heard your heart break.
Too often, we go to people with our heart break story before we go to God but my encouragement to you today is to go to Him first. In this first week of the year, we’re reminded that we need to put God first..
But can we put Him first in our list of emergency contacts?? He’s ALWAYS going to answer and His response is ALWAYS going to give you life.
His love, found most intimately in your broken heart experiences, will be the thing that will see you through. He says that He “saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
In a world where people can’t handle their spirit being crushed, we have to seek a better solution. When suicide and self harm seem like the best option, God lies there in wait. He’s only a prayer away. He WANTS you to call Him because Jesus said He CAME to seek and to save, that which was lost.
Having a broken heart can leave you feeling at a loss. Whether you feel like you’ve lost yourself, your control or your closest relationship… maybe you’ve lost your reputation or respect from those who used to be the closest to you. He will be the replacement for You. His love displayed, when it feels like no one else loves you, can be more than enough to get you through.
Just remember, its just a season. He saves you, heals you and restores you. Your broken heart is what He came to fix. You need to let Him come close by exposing your broken hearted mess for all that it is. And in that place, He will make your heart stronger. Then you’re ready for a greater season.
I know this because that’s what He did, and continues to do for me.
Father God, we thank you that there is nothing in our lives that you can’t handle. We thank you that we can come to you with all of our heart break and all of our despair. We thank you that in the midst of our dissappointment, you make an appointment to come close to us. Thank you for your love and thank you for your grace. We need it every single day. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
