“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
Revelation 3:20 NIV
There’s something about eating with a person that breaks down walls of communication: This was one of the greatest lessons I learned in youth work, and it always proved to be true- especially if the young person hadn’t had a good meal in a while!
Eating with others was also a cultural norm in Ethiopia, (where I lived for five years) as it would have been in the culture in Jesus’ day.
You can open a door and have that person stand there and talk, but allowing them in and eating with them creates new levels of intimacy. That’s what Jesus wants- intimacy with you.
He’s standing at the door of your heart, calling out, wanting to get your attention so you will invite Him in.
If you think about your heart being like a house with many rooms: some rooms are full of light, yet some are shaded in the covering of past trauma and abuse. Jesus, in His kindness, doesn’t approach all the rooms at once when He walks in. He waits for you to lead Him into the rooms youre ready to reveal and let Him heal .
Maybe you have that hidden closet that is forbidden to everyone. Its where you’ve stored all your trash because you’re too ashamed to show anyone your mess. Jesus wants to help you declutter.
He, in His infinite wisdom, knows the answer to your problem. He doesn’t think about how messy it is, He thinks about what will be uncovered once He removes all the unnecessary baggage you’ve been storing up.
He sees the beauty beneath the rubble- the freedom beyond the fear.
Trust is the key that will unlock the door to your heart. Maybe you have trust issues because your trust has been abused in the past. People will let you down, but God will never take your trust for granted, He will honour it for your benefit.
Lord Jesus, I open the door of my heart and invite you to come in. Thank you for waiting for me so patiently at the door of my heart. Thank you for being a Real Gentleman and not intruding where you haven’t been invited. You are welcome to stay and join me on my life journey. As you discover rooms in my heart that need tending to, give me the grace I need to address what needs to be addressed and throw out what needs to be thrown away. Thank you that You are my healer. In Jesus name I pray. Amen
