“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
Romans 8:6 NIV
Every day we have a choice about our thoughts. The Bible has a lot to say about thoughts and trains us in how we can best use this amazing mind that God has given us.
The circumstances that surround us, that confront us and that have affected us in the past, all have the ability to govern how we think. It’s in those moments that we can decide what thoughts we allow to plague our mind, and what thoughts we can trash.
There’s a war going on for our mind. The war is between two governing bodies: the flesh and the Spirit. You can tell which side is winning by the fruit they produce. Here’s a list of some of those fruit:
“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like….
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Galatians 5:19-23 NIV
God created us to produce the fruit of the Spirit because He knows that life flows better when we live in love and in joy and peace and all these good things.
Nobody feels good after being in a fit of rage. Nobody wants to be in relationship with someone who only has selfish ambition. Nobody can even survive without being nurtured in a safe environment.
And it all begins in your mind. How you think, and choose to act based on those thoughts will determine your destiny.
Governance is about authority and responsibility. If your flesh is trying to govern your mind, take back that authority and give it to the Spirit of God. He knows what to do with those thoughts. It’s not simple or cut and dry. It takes discipline and practice. But I want to remind you today that there is hope for a renewed way of thinking.
Holy Spirit, govern my mind. When intruding thoughts try to make a way in where only You need to reside, evict them. Keep my mind in line with yours. Help me to think only good things about myself and others. Whatever is true and noble, right and pure, let me think on these things. I know that I have allowed my flesh to govern my mind for far too long so help me to build new ways of thinking that bring peace and life into my day. For this I need your help. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
